How Does This Work?

Every week, we visit local farms, talk with the farmers, and purchase the freshest, yummiest food. We support farmers who nurture their soil, strive for sustainable farming practices, and don't use harmful or questionable products. Each week, you choose a la carte from the list of available food and pay for what you choose. We pack your share into reusable containers and you get your food. You, in turn, leave us the empty containers from last week's order and arrange payment. It's that simple!

To assist in your enjoyment of local produce, we will share storage information, preparation tips, recipes and ways to use new foods via this blog.

Sometimes, customers will have the option of adding eggs, honey, meat, cheese, mushrooms, bulk fruits, and other foods to their orders. Monthly, we order dry goods and food staples from Neshaminy Valley Natural Foods (based in Philidelphia, PA). These additional options are called Special Orders.

Is the food organic? Organic is such a key word these days. We go for local first, choosing farms that are as close as possible to the LaPlata area. Whenever there is an organic option, we will go with that. After that, we look for farmers who use IPM (integrated pest management), composting, and other sustainable practices. If you would like your food to be strictly organic, just let us know when you become a customer!

There are three membership options:
I) Weekly delivery to your home - cost $12/month + mileage charges
II) Weekly pickup at my home - cost $12/month
III) Special Orders Only - cost $5/order

So that you can adequately plan your food purchases, here is the schedule for the next few weeks:

Pasture Raised Ground Beef!

It's Only Natural Farm will be processing an entire cow as ground beef in a few weeks. This is pure grass-fed beef from a Texas Longhorn cow. It is being sold in one pound packages and has to be picked from the farm (or me) on November 28 (unless the butcher changes the pickup date by a day or two). There will be several hundred pounds of ground beef and it is being sold first come first served. To reserve your beef, go to itsonlynaturalfarm.com, create an account if you don't already have one, and order the ground beef. You will have to mail a deposit to the farm for your beef before the deadline listed. If you expect me to pick up your ground beef for you, you have to let me know and provide me with appropriate sized coolers!

From Next Step Produce:
The following are all certified organic

*** Order # of pieces you want - even if the charge is by the pound.

* asian persimmons @ $6/lb (small size) -- Known as "the apple of the orient"! Persimmons are bright orange in color and gooey sweet on the inside. We grow many different varieties ranging in size from a small apple to a really large apple. Just quarter them and eat them up, or make fabulous pies or cakes with their yummy flesh.

* grape kiwis @ $5/ half pint -- grape kiwis are a small grape-size kiwi hardy to our region. They look just like fuzzy kiwis on the inside, just smaller and not fuzzy on the outside - so you just pop them in your mouth. They are also wrinkled when ripe, not smooth and beautiful. Flavor is more important than beauty! Packed with vitamin C and delicious.

* acorn squash @ $2.50/lb -- Dry nutty-flavored flesh. Great just cut in half, greased and baked cut-side down. Then complement with just plain olive oil or butter, or get fancy with a vinaigrette of garlic/ ginger/ ume plum paste or vinegar/ sweetener. Also great for stuffing.

* butternut squash @ $2/lb
* sunshine squash @ $2.00/lb
* red hybrid tomatoes @ $3.6/lb
* yellow/orange heirloom tomatoes @ $4.6/lb
* pink/purple heirloom tomatoes @ $4.6/lb
* red plum tomatoes @ $3.20/lb

* red bell peppers @6/lb
* yellow bell peppers @ $6/lb
* red corno di toro frying peppers @ $6.80/lb
* asian eggplant @ $3.60/lb
* italian eggplant @ $3/lb
* arugula @ $3/bag - finally, the first of our fall greens! So refreshing to have. Arugula is a favorite mustard green - very flavorful with just the right heat. Great in salads with walnuts

* sweet potato greens @ $3/bunch
* french breakfast radishes @ $2.50/bunch -- the long slender kind which is red at the top half and white at the bottom half

* regular onions @ $3/lb
* garlic bulb @ $8.50/lb (typical bulb costs $1-$1.50)

*** Order these things by the pound or fraction thereof:

* sunchokes @ $5/lb -- edible tuber, member of the sunflower family. sweet, nut-like flavor with crisp texture resembling water chestnut

* fresh ginger @ $15/lb -- fresh ginger means it is not mature (our growing season is not long enough for that). Therefore it is not-at-all stringy and has no skin to peel off. It is the tender juicy ginger used in making sushi ginger. Absolutely spectacular!

From It's Only Natural Farm:
* free range, organically fed medium eggs @ $2.50/dz

Buy Local Challenge

Have you heard of the Buy Local Challenge? Join me in registering your pledge:

Of course I encourage to extend this pledge to cover the entire year and more than one thing, but we must all take baby steps. Eat Local and tell others you are doing it! Click here to be counted and to register your pledge.

New Source of Duck and Chicken Eggs

Have you ever had fresh duck eggs? They are divine. I recently got a few from Farmer Dana, Head Bottle Washer and Hen Herder at Moose Manor Farm in Pomfret, MD. She sells naturally raised chicken eggs, duck eggs, free range meat chickens, free range meat ducks, and birds for you to raise. Try her out! She updates her web site daily with the quantity of eggs she has in stock. Tomorrow she is harvesting chickens to sell for meat. If you want one, go reserve one today as there is a limited number of birds available.

What's available in this harvest at Moose Manor Farm:

Dana will be doing all the processing and packaging on Saturday, July 17th  pick up of fresh, unfrozen birds is on Sunday from 9am -7pm or Monday from 5pm - 7pm.  At 7pm Monday all uncollected birds will be placed in the freezer and folks can contact me to arrange a convenient pick up time.

Whole Cornish Roasters (15 birds):
$3 per pound. Hens average 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 lb. and cockerels average 4 to 6 lb. These birds are young, tender, and very meaty. Excellent for roasting, grilling, or frying. Raised Free & Humanely without grow-lights, antibiotics or pesticides.

Whole Muscovy Duck (6 birds):
$3 per pound. Hens average 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 lb. and drakes average 6 to 8 lb. High in meat-to-bone ratio, with less weight loss after cooking than Pekin ducks. Low in fat with a wonderful veal-like texture and flavor. Excellent when roasted whole; breasts are great to sauté or grill. Raised Free & Humanely without grow-lights, antibiotics or pesticides.

Whole Welsh Harlequin Duck (3 birds):
Drakes average 3 to 5 lb.  These high quality lean roasters are  rich-tasting and a good source of nutrients like iron, zinc and selenium. Excellent when roasted whole and well sized making for a beautiful table bird.

Dana is planning a second harvest in the November timeframe so if someone isn't able to get a bird this time there will be posting another reservation event this fall.

This Week's Food (6/4/10)

Orders are due by noon friday!

New! From Wooded Bliss - Fresh and locally roasted coffee!

Available as whole beans or pre-ground, in a variety of sizes: 1/4 lb ($2.50), 1/2 lb ($5), or 1 lb ($10). Coffee will come in a refillable glass jar; return it for next time!

Bean Choice #1:
Brazil Joao de Campos Wet Process Decaf
The farm is in a region called Alto Paranaíba near Serra do Salitre. It is a high plain in Cerrado Miniero, Minas Gerais state.  This decaf lot is quite consistent with the non-decaf lot: We like this coffee for its consistency.  The dry fragrance has a lot of roast notes to it; both sweet-savory aspects and an interesting fruit-nut-chocolate compound scent. At City roast the aromas are malty sweet and lightly fruited, with a hazelnut note, but at FC+ they are much more aggressive and potent, with bittersweet chocolate tangy scents. Full City has the best cup, a nice balance between caramel and chocolate roast notes. The acidity is very muted, and the body thick, buttery, dense.  Enjoy a cup of decaf  without the benefits of a full caffeinated coffee.
Be sure to let me know if you would like a FC+ (dark roast) or a City roast (not as dark).

Bean Choice #2:
Java Kaju mas Organic Wet-Hulled
This coffee hails from the Kajumas area in East Java, and is the first certified Organic Java coffee my supplier has offered.  Wet-hull processing means the coffee is picked, the skin pulped, and then the seed is partly dried.  When it still has 25-30% moisture it is hulled out of the parchment, and laid out in the sun for final drying.  Much of that low-toned Indonesia flavor is due to this unique process.  The dry fragrance has a sweet woody quality, a foresty wet earth note and a bit of syrup to it.  It is definitely Indonesian in character.  The cup has huge body and earthy chocolate flavors.   If you like it let me know and I’ll see if I can get more.  There is a limited amount and I can only order 1 lb at a time.  Currently I have 1 lb of beans on hand.  As I write this I am drinking a freshly roasted cup.  It is very smooth with very low acidity.  Pleasant aftertaste.

Local Grains

Ecosystem Farm in Accokeek is coordinating an opportunity to get grains brought over from a Virginia farm, Moutoux Orchards. Ecosystem Farm is offering a grain share for $50. In your grain share, you get one 4 lb bag of grain for the months of July, August, September, October, November. You can choose from wheat, rye, spelt, or oats. If you choose a wheat share, you will get wheat each month. It might be possible to request a different grain for one month, but it is not guaranteed. You can get whole berries or freshly milled (ground) the day before delivery. All grain share members must plan to pick up their grains from the Ecosystem Farm in Accokeek on either a Tuesday or Friday afternoon 3:30-6:30 (on the one week each month when grain shares are available). This is considered a grain CSA, so payment up front an in the very near future is needed. For more info, please contact Mike Snow at Ecosystem Farm (msnow@accokeek.org).

If you want to order grains through Frankferd Farms, a natural food distributor from Pittsburgh, PA, I can order those for you as well. Orders for Frankferd will be due to me with next week's food order.

Local, Free Range Poultry

Do you want to buy local, free range, chemical and hormone free chicken, turkey, or duck to eat? Do you scramble at the last minute to find a yummy, natural turkey for your end of year Holidays? Look no more. Two local farms that I frequent can meet your needs. Remember that there are links to the farm web sites down the left side of the blog under "Farms We Support".

It's Only Natural Farm in Nanjemoy is currently taking orders for holiday turkeys, the first of two batches of chickens, and muscovy ducks. They do more than poultry though. They raise goats, hogs, and cattle for meat (sorry but the cattle is sold out for 2010 already). This year, all animals or sides/quarters of animals are SOLD BY PRE-ORDER ONLY. Now is the time to get those pre-orders in. Just visit ION's online store. Be sure to put my name in the "referral code" area when you register. Payment is not done online right now - only ordering (then you send a check in).

Can't wait months to get some fabulous chicken? Good Fortune Farm in Brandywine has whole fresh chickens available right now. They are $3/lb and typically weight 6-7 lbs. They will need picked up within days after butcher since the farmer has no freezer space to store them for you. Let me know how many you want and I can get them or you can contact the farmer yourself (please tell him I gave you the info).

Want to taste some of this local food? Come to our Vernal Equinox Party.

This Week's Food (1/22/10)

Orders are due by noon friday!

NOTE: I will be out of town for the next delivery cycle (2 weeks from now). The next time I will be delivering is one month from now. You might want to order a month's worth of veges that store well (squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, garlic). I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to place your orders directly with the farms and pick up your produce while I am gone. You would get to visit the farms and talk with the farmers; you can really get to know where your food comes from.
